Jessa Brinkmeyer Owner of Pivot Boutique Jessa Brinkmeyer opened Pivot, chicago’s fi rst boutique devoted to eco-fashion, in September 2007. Prior to starting Pivot, Jessa was an associate editor at a chicago magazine after graduating from northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. It was while working as a journalist that Jessa discovered the developing eco-fashion movement and became passionate about promoting eco designers in chicago through a retail shop. Over the past two years Pivot has garnered signifi cant attention in both local and national media outlets for being a leader in the eco- friendly design and retailing communities. In April 2009, Jessa was chosen as one of six chicagoland individuals to be featured in Chicago magazine’s Green Awards for her work with Pivot. As a pioneer in chicago’s green retailing scene, Jessa often plans events with an educational focus in order to promote further awareness of sustainable design issues. her premier event was a featured part of Fashion Focus chicago 2008. Jessa organized a four-day exhibit titled MoSS: Museum of Sustainable Style which featured local sustainable furniture and fashion designers in a museum-like setting with an educational panel discussion and short animated fi lm. Jessa enjoys working with other green business owners and also like-minded nonprofi ts such as Growing home. (pivotboutique.com) » How I came to be doing what I do… While working as a journalist covering fashion stories I began following the developing eco-fashion movement and became obsessed with it. It just made so much sense to me—why wouldn’t we want to wear clothes that are healthier for the environment, people producing them and those wearing them? I found these designers remarkable for wanting to reduce the fashion industry’s environmental impact without sacrifi cing the beauty and integrity of their designs! » Favorite hidden nature spot… The Chicago Botanical Gardens—not hidden at all, but I don’t think enough people make it up there. » Best place to grab a meal… Mana on Division Street (the pumpkin ravioli in the winter is the best thing ever). » How I clear my head… I go to sleep. I love to sleep. » Something about me that surprises people… I’m barely 26 years old. » Things I love about Chicago… That it’s such a large, diverse, dynamic city, but yet it feels like a small community in many ways. » How I unwind at the end of the day...
