Here are some commu-nity service options for children of any age. These organizations offer fun, flexible ways for kids to help others. Operation Goody Bag ( operationgoodybag. org ) provides information on how to deco-rate and fill brown lunch bags to show ap-preciation for the sacrifices made by Amer-ica’s first responders. The program ships these brown lunch bags, hand-colored with patriotic themes and filled with candy, gum, a personal letter, original poetry and puzzles, to U.S. military personnel as well as local fire, rescue, ambulance, K9 organizations as well as veterans’ homes, VFW posts, military hos-pitals and U.S. military academies. Another organization is Cheerful Givers ( cheerfulgivers.org ), which provides birthday gift bags for kids ages 3 to 12, distributing them at shelters and food pantries. Families can hold a Birthday Bag Blitz to put together gift bags based on recommendations provid-ed on the website. The Peter Pan Children’s Fund ( peterpan childrensfund.org ) originated from a child’s idea. Children register, select a children’s hos-pital that will benefit and ask friends to bring a check for the hospital to their birthday party, then make a date with the hospital to present the donation. The Fund sends participants an official Peter Pan Birthday Club certificate and crest pin. Children and teens who participate are also eligible for consideration for induction into The Second Star to the Right Hall of Fame. mInDFULmeTroPoLIS.Com 15
